Gilbert Tinner, a musician from St. Gallen, began his musical career with the Knabenmusik St. Gallen. After completing his professional studies at the Swiss Jazz School in Bern, specializing in trombone, composition, and arranging, he developed a versatile and highly influential career as a conductor, composer, arranger, and instrumentalist.
As a musical director, Tinner has shaped numerous renowned wind orchestras and big bands, including the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) Orchestra, which he has conducted with passion since 1997.
During his military service, he led the first big band of the Swiss Army (Big Band F Div 7). Later, under Pepe Lienhard, he served as co-leader and arranger of the Swiss Army Big Band and as bandleader of the Swiss Army Gala Band. This collaboration led him to join Pepe Lienhard's touring and concert ensembles, including his big band and the orchestra of Udo Jürgens. Tinner also created arrangements for numerous international stars, including the legendary Montreux Jazz Festival concerts with Quincy Jones in 2008 and 2013.
In the classical field, Tinner was a member of the Brass Quartet of St. Gallen Cathedral for 35 years, serving approximately 15 years as its musical director. He also performed as a freelance trombonist with various classical orchestras.
Throughout his career, he has produced countless arrangements ranging from symphonic wind music to big band repertoire. Many of his works have been published by Hal Leonard and Obrasso.
Since 2018, he has been the conductor of the Celebration Pops Orchestra, and since 2019, he has led the Bodan Art Orchestra, a professional ensemble dedicated to creative big-band music. As a lecturer and clinician, Gilbert Tinner is regularly invited to national and international workshops.
